What is Plan B?

Plan B, (also known as the morning-after pill, Restart, emergency contraceptives, etc.) is a one-time pill that works to prevent pregnancy before it starts. Plan B contains the hormone levonorgestrel, which can also be found in hormonal birth control pills.

How does Plan B pill work?

Plan B works by delaying ovulation so sperm cannot fertilize an egg. Plan B works when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, but the sooner you take it the more effective.

Please note that Plan B is not the same as the abortion pill, and if you’re already pregnant, the morning-after pill won’t work because it does not terminate an existing pregnancy. This form of emergency contraception doesn’t cause a miscarriage or abortion, so speak with your primary care provider about your options if you are wanting to end an existing pregnancy.

How often can you take Plan B?

There is no limit to the amount of times you can safely take Plan B. You can take Plan B as many times as you need it. HOWEVER, emergency contraception is not intended to be your regular birth control method. It’s less effective than regular contraception and does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, plus the side effects can be stronger than those of regular birth control.

How much does Plan B cost?

Plan B One Step generally costs between $40-$55, with tax. There are other generic brands you can find that cost less than $40. The morning-after pill can be pricey. If you need a dose, but can’t afford it, check out our Restart donation bank to get a free morning-after pill.

“The brand of EC you buy or how much you pay for it doesn’t matter — all brand-name and generic levonorgestrel morning-after pills work just as well.”
