Can I cure a UTI with cranberry juice?

You’ve probably heard the myth before “Just drink some cranberry juice, it’ll clear up your UTI.” It was the bain of my college existence. It’s one of the most common home remedies out there, but here’s the truth… Cranberry juice cannot cure a urinary tract infection. And forgoing proper treatment for a UTI can land you in the ER with a kidney infection.

What is a UTI?
A UTI happens when bacteria (most often E. coli, the same bacteria found in your gut) enter your urinary tract and multiply in your bladder. Symptoms include: burning when you pee, the constant urge to go, pressure in your lower abdomen, and sometimes cloudy or strong-smelling urine. In short, it’s uncomfortable, disruptive, and unfortunately it won’t go away on its own.

How can I treat a UTI?
Once bacteria are in your bladder, the only proven way to clear them out is with antibiotics. Antibiotics target and kill the bacteria, preventing the infection from spreading upward to your kidneys, where things can become far more serious and even dangerous. Without antibiotics, a “simple” UTI can escalate quickly, which is why healthcare providers don’t recommend waiting it out or relying on home remedies.

Does cranberry help UTIs?
Cranberries contain a natural sugar called D-mannose, which may help prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall. That’s why cranberry supplements (especially when combined with ingredients like D-mannose and vitamin C) are often recommended as part of a prevention strategy. But drinking cranberry juice once you already have a UTI won’t kill the infection, it will just add extra sugar to your diet. This can actually fuel bacterial growth.

Here’s what you need to remember…

  • UTIs are bacterial infections.
  • Antibiotics are the only cure.
  • Cranberry products can help with prevention, but not treatment.

So, enjoy cranberry juice for brunch or as part of a balanced diet, but when it comes to UTIs, think of it as prevention support, not a cure. If you’re experiencing UTI symptoms, the best step is to test quickly and start antibiotics right away. Your bladder will thank you.
