It’s safe to assume that most women are familiar with the itch of a yeast infection, the burn of a UTI, or the dreaded combination of these two symptoms that often points to Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Because these conditions are so commonly associated with women, we don’t always stop to ask: can men get yeast infections, UTIs, or even BV? And if I’m experiencing one of these, is it contagious? Could I pass it to my partner through sex, or vice versa?
Men can get both yeast infections and urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Although they occur more frequently in women, these infections are relatively common. It is estimated that between 3-11% of men will experience a yeast infection, and close to 12% will get a UTI at some point in their lives. Though this is a much lower rate, compared to the 75% of women that will get a yeast infection and the 40-60% that will have a UTI at least once in their lifetime.
Symptoms of yeast infections in men
In men, symptoms of a yeast infection are similar to those experienced by women and may include itching, burning during urination, skin irritation, or genital inflammation. They can be triggered by similar factors as in women, such as prolonged moisture or antibiotic use, and can also be transmitted through sexual contact with a partner who has a yeast infection.
Symptoms of UTIs in men
Similarly, men with UTIs experience symptoms comparable to those in women, including a burning sensation during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and pelvic discomfort. Men can get UTIs for various reasons. The most common cause in younger men are STDs. Two STIs that can cause a UTI are Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Other issues can also cause STIs, such as dehydration, kidney stones, prostate problems, diabetes, etc. UTIs are not contagious and cannot be spread from partner to partner.

Can men get BV?
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a bit different. The infection only occurs in individuals with vaginas, so men cannot technically be diagnosed with BV. However, men can carry and transmit the bacteria associated with BV between female partners. If the female partner is treated for BV but the male partner is not, the untreated partner may still harbor the bacteria, which can lead to recurring infections in women. This cycle of reinfection is a common and frustrating experience for many.
To clarify the sexual health implications: yes, you can pass a yeast infection to your partner, and yes, they might end up itchy too. BV is a little sneakier — your partner won’t get symptoms, but they can carry the bacteria and pass it right back. UTIs are thankfully not contagious, but having sex with one can feel like setting your pelvic floor on fire and possibly worsen your symptoms, so not recommended!
