A sex educator's post-election resource guide
It’s been over a month since the election, but we are definitely still feeling some type of way – as are all of us who care deeply about reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ equality, protection of immigrants, and so many other crucial civil rights issues that will now be under attack from the Trump Administration. It’s easy to feel sad, angry, and numb, but it’s important for us to arm ourselves with information and resources to fight back!
Try not to despair – the majority of Americans don’t support what Trump does. As we count more and more of the votes, it turns out that Trump, while capturing the electoral college, actually received less than 50% of the vote; the election was much closer than originally reported. So you are not alone in how you’re feeling right now. We can’t give up.
Take abortion, for example, abortion access is actually incredibly popular among voters: two-thirds of Americans oppose a national abortion ban. We saw this play out in the state-level ballot initiatives: even in states that voted for Trump, large percentages of voters supported abortion access. For example, in Missouri, voters overturned a near-total abortion ban, a first in the nation. This means that everyday people expressing their opposition to abortion bans is going to be a key piece of activism during this new administration. Psst -- that’s where we come in!
So what can we do? Here’s a 4-step list to guide you.
- 1) Focus on community. Find community that make you feel safe and seen, and also doing work for our community is essential. We need to keep showing up for each other and building power at the local level. Follow @sexedwithdbpodcast, @winxhealth, and @abortionfunds for medically accurate sex ed and abortion info.
- 2) Support abortion funds. After the Dobbs decision, abortion funds have become even more crucial, helping cover the rising costs for those who need to travel out of state, navigate complicated laws, or access medication by mail. But with post-Dobbs outrage donations slowing down, these funds are struggling to keep up. Set up a small, monthly donation—even $5—goes a long way in providing a reliable budget for abortion funds to operate and expand access. Follow this link to find a local abortion fund TODAY and make a monthly donation. Sex Ed with DB is donating $20 per month to the Tampa Bay Abortion Fund. Where will you donate?
- 3) Share the love. Email us at sexedwithdb@gmail.com with your donation receipt and we’ll shout you out on our IG as the hero you are!
- 4) Get involved in local politics. Follow local news and government updates to stay on top of what’s going on in your community, call your local officials, sign petitions, volunteer, or attend a Town Hall. Local policy matters just as much as national, yet it gets much less attention.
Let’s keep talking, keep learning, and keep showing up for each other. This is a tough moment, and there’s no denying that. But we’ve fought these battles before, and we’ll keep fighting. We’re stronger together, and we’re not going anywhere. Thanks for being here, and remember: this fight isn’t over—it’s only just beginning.
