Having to take Plan B (or any brand of the morning-after pill) can be scary. This is mostly because we aren’t taught much about how Plan B works or what to expect when we take it. We’re here to answer your questions about the morning-after pill and equip you with the knowledge you need to feel comfortable and confident when taking it. From personal experience and talking to other women, one of the most frequently asked questions about Plan B is does it make you bleed?

Does Plan B make you bleed?
Vaginal bleeding when you aren’t on your period can feel uncomfortable and like something is wrong – but if some bleeding occurs after taking the morning-after pill, do not worry! Yes, Plan B can make you bleed. Light bleeding or spotting afterwards is totally normal. The spotting may last for a couple of days, or even a week. For some people, it may take up to a month for their bodies to readjust. It is important to note that heavy bleeding is not expected after taking Plan B. If you are bleeding more heavily than a normal period, it is important to talk to your doctor. 

Does your period change after taking Plan B?
It is normal to experience irregularities with your period after taking Plan B: your flow can be heavier or lighter, come earlier or later. However, by the beginning of your next cycle, your hormones should be back to normal.
